The phone rang for a long while. “Pick up, Dick.” Barbara sighed. She tapped her fingers on her desk as she held the cell phone up to her ear. She hummed, sung a few bars, gosh. Why wouldn’t he answer?
It felt like the phone had been ringing for hours. Barbara didn’t understand why, or why her heart was beating a million miles and hour or why she was breathing heavily or why she was nervous about calling him.
“Hey.” Barbara’s heart skipped a beat when she heard Dick’s voice. “Dick!” She yelled into the phone, a bit louder than she meant to. “I have great news! I —”
“I’m out right now. You know what to do.”
Barbara hung up and threw her phone across the room.
Why did she even bother?
